Jaana Narsipur has been singing since she was a child, her influences ranging from 1970s radio pop to traditional Indian music when she performed with her parents at community events and parties. At age 11, Jaana began studying classical voice and piano. She continued those studies at Northwestern University, obtaining her BM in Voice and Music History.
During her undergraduate years, Jaana fell in love with jazz and began sitting in on jam sessions, learning the standards, and listening to greats like Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald. It was during these years that Jaana found her other passion – teaching music. After obtaining her music education degree from DePaul University, Jaana began teaching music full-time in Chicago Public Schools.
Jaana completed her Masters in Jazz Performance in 2013 at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. Jaana has studied with jazz legend Sheila Jordan, Chicago vocalist Jackie Allen, and New York vocalist JD Walter. She has performed for various events and in clubs in Chicago, Washington DC, New York, and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Jaana continues to perform in clubs, restaurants and cafes in the New York metropolitan area, where she lives with her husband and two children.
